At Prairie Vision Center we treat a wide range of eye emergencies regularly.
A study published in the Archives of Ophthalmology showed some interesting statistics worth noting. The study reviewed hospital records for patients who visited the emergency room for a problem concerning their eyes.
What the study found was that an overwhelming number of emergency room visits could have been treated by an optometrist. The researchers found that 84 percent of the visits could have been treated by optometrists.
These ranged from foreign bodies to severe eye allergies to eye infections as the most common reasons for emergency room visits. The only visits that were beyond the scope of an optometrist were open wounds involving the eye, or bone fractures around the eye.
The study clearly shows that it is not always necessary to go to an emergency room for eye emergencies. Optometrists are equipped to treat the majority of eye emergencies.
The savings is also substantial as emergency room visits cost a minimum of hundreds of dollars. An eye emergency treated by an optometrist could cost as little as 50 dollars depending on the severity.
Additionally, most optometrists are better equipped to treat eye disease and are more knowledgeable on the subject of eye emergencies than an ER doctor. Finally, most major medical insurance plans are accepted at most optometric offices.
